Chinese and foreign volunteers in Pingshan District crafted massage hammers and sachets filled with mugwort leaves at an event held in Maluan Subdistrict on June 6 to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival.

Mugwort leaves are believed to possess medicinal properties and are used in Chinese medicine for their warming and healing effects. Hanging mugwort leaves during the Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional practice thought to repel insects, ward off evil spirits, promote good health, and prevent diseases. The soothing aroma of mugwort can relax the body and mind, easing stress and anxiety. Gently tapping various body parts with a mugwort-filled hammer is believed to help alleviate physical fatigue.

At the June 6 event, both Chinese and expat volunteers learned the art of crafting hammers and sachets filled with mugwort leaves. They also learned the techniques of using the hammer for self-massage. This hands-on experience not only introduced everyone to traditional Chinese handicrafts but also immersed them in a vibrant festive ambiance.

Samuel Sadiq from Germany has attended numerous volunteering activities in Pingshan. He expressed that through crafting the hammers and sachets, he has developed a deeper interest in traditional Chinese medicine. “Contributing to the community and society through my efforts holds great significance for me,” he remarked.

Staff members from Maluan Subdistrict highlighted how this event promotes traditional Chinese culture, emphasizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and acknowledges the enduring dedication of the volunteers.
